Summer Blues in Michigan

by Cinda Shaver · Leave a Comment

So it’s summer here on the road. We’re at Hidden Lakes RV resort in Manchester MI. It’s a newer campground, beautiful, peaceful, well appointed and friendly. Here’s my morning view,

Can’t really complain!

We said goodbye to Carolyn a week ago then made tracks for our new locale. On the way we tried to wash our wheely house, but it was a bust. The space was too small for our big semi-size house. We were trying to rid ourselves of all the mayfly ick, and we managed to hose most of them off. But they live on in the crevices and cracks of our windows, doors, and outside storage. I spent an hour cleaning them out of our outdoor cooking space.

It wasn’t pretty.

As planned, Bruce is billing hours, working and loving his new view. He continues to pursue more contracts to fill his time. Along with the maintenance work of maintaining a home on wheels, he’s a fairly busy guy. Driving, sewer, water, propane, starting campfires and in general handling all those outside activities needed for this life.

But moi’?

I’ve hit a wall. My creative juices are lying dormant. Everything right now seems like too much work. I finally took apart a crochet project and restarted it with a new pattern. It gives me something to do in the evenings. The heat wave hasn’t helped. Spending time outside is like taking a hot shower. When it wasn’t hot it rained. Today is lovely, I’m writing this outside, and plan to finish a book once I’m done. Anytime we can eat a meal or two outside we’re living in perfect weather.

But how long will it last?

We’re far more weather affected than if we were living in a stick house. We build living spaces outside as we can. There are RV groups that specifically follow weather! Ones that constantly move to 70 degree climates. One called ‘Chasing 70 Degrees’, a women’s only group, has been doing this for some time. There are also mapping/weather guides for living in 70 degrees as often as possible. One follows the Gulf shoreline from FL to CA, 7,000+ miles.

We did 8,000+ last year on the RV, over 10 on the truck.

Evenings in MI are amazing. Twilight goes on till about 10pm. Sunsets are glorious. Perfect for sitting around a fire, enjoying a long talk and just resting in the peaceful outdoors. Dang that dragon show! It required me to put on pj’s and prep for bed when we could have enjoyed a cup of tea and some fire time.

Please don’t judge me, I’m addicted to those dragons.

Monday is usually my laundry day. I try to keep a routine, it’s always subject to change depending on our schedule. But I can usually count on Mondays being a home day with time for cooking, laundry and a bit of tidying up, possibly a grocery run. An unstructured life still needs routines! We may change locations, sights, activities and people, so a general routine is helpful.

We have a morning routine. Coffee, podcast, prayer and a kiss. Bruce is the designated coffee bringer. He enjoys this little routine, enough that on weekends when our podcast takes a break, he’ll still follow the program. Milo is all for it.

He hears the music from the opening of the podcast and hops on the bed. Maybe a bit of a bath then it’s nap time. Speaking of routines, animals are all about them. He knows a moving day because his crate comes out. He knows where to hide when the vacuum runs. He has an evening spot for TV viewing, he knows where his food cupboard is. And he’s all about the open windows for bird watching.

The guy is a true diva.

A new day has started, with a fierce storm. Rain, lightning, thunder cracking close by. It’s all magnified in an RV. The park is dead, all of us are indoors hiding. Even the children are cooped up. It’s not really safe to be out in a storm like this.

But we are snug, safe and watching from the wings.

A note from a friend has inspired me sewing wise. I’m plotting my next quilt project. Dinner is planned, laundry finished and a shower is in order. Bruce is working, shredded wheat is waiting and last night’s dishes are ready for their homes.

Time to get cracking!
