Life Unimagined

Living While Traveling

by Cinda Shaver · Leave a Comment

So…it’s been a few weeks! We’re still here, living on the road and enjoying life without a permanent home. Learning all the time about the best ways to navigate this kind world.

And what a world it is!

We arrived in Tucson on January 25th, driving from Las Cruces New Mexico. Our 10 days prior to Tucson, were all about making it across Texas so we could land here for the winter months. Bruce was wrestling with a sinus infection since New Orleans (this is how we remember time anymore) and I managed to contract it in New Mexico.

Sigh…

People have asked me how you deal with illness while living on vacation or in an RV. Honestly, it’s no different than it would be in a house. Walgreen’s, urgent care and cough drops are all available, even in the most remote parts of the country. And if Walgreen’s isn’t around, there is always, always, always a Dollar store of some kind. We have a bedroom, recliners, heat, water, toilet, shower, laundry, TV, and plenty of bathroom storage to hold all of our medicine supplies.

It’s just very compact

This illness managed to wipe me out for at least a couple of weeks. Last week I began to feel enough energy to do life again. Did some quilting and cooking which helped my mental state. And this weekend we managed a trip around the area to get out of the house. Fancy shopping mall, and the San Xavier del bac Mission.

This makes 3 major religious buildings we’ve seen since we’ve begun our trip. Growing up Protestant, Catholic houses of worship are more like art galleries to us. We appreciate the architecture and artistry that is present in them. And the history of the church’s influence on the local areas is not to be missed.

Another reason we’ve been home bound is the weather. As much as we’ve loved the sunshine here, there’s been a lot of rain. Also lower temps, 40’s at night and upper 50’s in the daytime. We’ve had a couple of 70 degrees days, but nothing to really brag about. In fact, many mornings there’s been frost/ice on the truck windshield. But the snow in the surrounding mountains is gorgeous.

Westward
Not Westward

One of the most beautiful things about AZ are its mountains. Sunsets can be spectacular. We’ve yet to see one, our RV park is in downtown Tucson with nary a view. Next week we plan to change that. In fact, our entire trip to Tucson has been sort of upended by plan changes. Bruce had to eliminate one contract, gear up another and begin the search for a 2nd. And the RV park we landed in? Let’s just say it didn’t live up to it’s online description.

Ever see Breaking Bad?

I won’t say it’s fully reminiscent of it, but dang close. The spaces are tight. No parking, no picnic tables, barely room to open slides, and the garbage doesn’t get picked up on time. Lots of run down, permanent, RV’s. We thought we’d move sooner, but circumstances did not fall into place as we hoped. Never mind, we’re moving to a resort on the 21st and will recover our amazing, relaxing, sightseeing life there. And then it’s on to Mesa for a month of visits, sewing school observation and warmer weather.

So we continue to learn and plan. After Arizona we’ll make our way back to the Midwest for all of May and some of summer. Our grandson’s BD is taking us to Toledo by end of April. Our youngest has tagged us to spend most of May near her while she finishes up her school year. Fingers crossed we can find a campground near Lake Geneva WI, cuz that’s where her school is. It’s slim pickings out there. And June finds us in Michigan at Sterling State Park for a couple of weeks. The in-between dates are still being planned and booked.

As our friend Hank said in NC, “A quarter at a time”

It’s working well to plan that way. Flexibility and stability all at the same time. And so far, we’re having a ball!

Minus all the illness
